On a multi-stop Peru itinerary, the best areas to stay in Peru depend on whether you need walkability, early transportation access, altitude adjustment, or proximity to a major attraction.
Here are the best areas to stay that work best along the TravUp Peru route:
- Lima (first stay): stay in Miraflores for its walkability, restaurants, oceanfront location, and easy access to the city’s main attractions. Avoid staying in Lima’s historic center overnight.
- Paracas: there is a good selection of hotels here. You will find everything from luxury resorts to smaller, comfortable places to stay.
- Nazca: expect simple rather than luxurious accommodation. Comfortable hotels are available, but this is a practical overnight stop.
- Lima (before flying to Cusco): stay in Miraflores again. Even with an early domestic flight, the neighborhood offers a much safer overall experience than staying near the airport.
- Cusco: stay in the historic center, ideally around Plaza de Armas. Book the same hotel for both Cusco stays so you can leave your main luggage there while visiting Machu Picchu.
- Aguas Calientes: stay close to the town center and railway station for the easiest access to Machu Picchu buses and train departures.
- Puno: choose either the historic center near Plaza Mayor for convenience or a lakeside hotel on Lake Titicaca if views are your priority. Avoid accommodation far from both areas.

For your first stay in Peru, we recommend booking a hotel in Miraflores.
Miraflores is one of Lima’s safest and most comfortable neighborhoods. It offers accommodation for every budget, excellent restaurants, cafés, and easy access to the city’s main attractions.
If your schedule allows, try to spend the weekend in Lima. Every Saturday and Sunday, the historic center hosts colorful parades and cultural performances celebrating Peruvian traditions.
We do not recommend staying overnight in Lima’s historic center. Unlike many European cities, the area is best explored during the day. After dark, some streets can feel less comfortable, making Miraflores a much better base for your stay.

We do not recommend booking a hotel close to Lima Airport. A safer and more enjoyable evening in Miraflores is well worth the additional transfer time the next morning.

We recommend staying in the historic center, ideally around Plaza de Armas. This location gives you easy access to the city’s main attractions, restaurants, and cafés while keeping you close to the heart of Cusco.

You will arrive early in the morning, and even after a comfortable bus journey, having a place to rest before continuing your trip makes a big difference.
Puno offers two good accommodation options. If you prefer peace and beautiful views, choose a hotel on the shores of Lake Titicaca. If you want to explore the city on foot, stay in the historic center around Plaza Mayor.
Avoid booking hotels in neighborhoods far from both the city center and the lakeshore.

Miraflores is the best base in Lima for most first-time visitors. It offers restaurants, coastal views, shopping, and convenient access to Barranco. Barranco is a strong alternative for travelers who prefer a more artistic atmosphere. The historic center is worth visiting but is usually less practical as a base.
Where should you stay when visiting Machu Picchu?
Stay in Aguas Calientes the night before visiting Machu Picchu if you want an early entrance and less travel pressure. Ollantaytambo works well before the train journey but does not replace the convenience of sleeping near Machu Picchu when your admission begins early.
Is it better to stay in Cusco or the Sacred Valley?
Stay in both when the itinerary permits. Cusco provides access to major historical sites, restaurants, and urban culture. The Sacred Valley offers a lower elevation, quieter surroundings, and easier access to Maras, Moray, and Ollantaytambo. Splitting the stay reduces unnecessary backtracking.
